weim & cheese
Saturday, Mar 14th, we attended the Weim & Cheese fundraiser. It’s a fundraiser to raise money for our local Weimaraner Rescue, Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue.
I took a pic of the cute centerpieces:

We bid on an espresso basket and won the item! I’m thankful we could attend, because Weimaraners are very important to us. Our Weim, Elijah will be turning 6 years old this May.
Protect Tennessee’s Streams – WWF
I just used World Wildlife Fund’s Conservation Action Network to to defend Tennessee’s rivers and streams by opposing state legislation that would strip protections from important waters in the state. I urge you to take action, too, at http://wwf.worldwildlife.org/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=223.
The legislation has been introduced in both the Tennessee House of Representatives and the Senate. A subcommittee in the House recently approved the bill. We need to stop it now to prevent it from moving to the full House and gaining momentum.
The bill proposes to remove state protection from the headwaters of rivers and streams. Thousands of miles of streams could be affected. Many migratory birds, amphibians and mammals use these habitats.
Without the benefit of state protection, these streams would be subject to pollution and being filled in. Polluting a headwater stream has the same effect as polluting a year-round stream. The pollution will end up in our rivers, degrading fish and wildlife habitat, and endangering public health.
Last year, WWF activists in Tennessee helped stop related legislation. We need to act again.
The habitats at risk are part of the Southeast Rivers and Streams ecoregion, which World Wildlife Fund has identified as one of the richest, rarest and most biologically important ecoregions in the world.
Speak out now to protect the waters and biodiversity of Tennessee. Go to http://wwf.worldwildlife.org/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=223.
Please ask others in Tennessee to take this action also. Thanks!
world vegetarian day
Happy World Vegetarian Day! Today is October the first! Can you believe it is October already? Fall is finally here and there is a nice cool breeze outside. Today is a great day to turn over a new leaf, Go Veg and think about how you can become more aware of what you eat everyday.
My favorite book that I read and changed my life was John Robbins, The Food Revolution. Another good book that changed the lives of many of my friends is Kim Barnouin and Rory Freedman’s, Skinny Bitch
.
Happy Veg Day to all my veggie friends & family!

a tip…
I was reading thru the VegCooking blog, and read that Guinness is not vegan. Though I do not drink Guinness, I know others that do, such as my husband…I guess he won’t be anymore. So, I thought I would do a little researching…I try to keep up on all the vegan beer & wines, but it can be difficult. The reason Guinness, for example, is not vegan is because it is filtered with a substance called Isinglass. Most cask ales and beer are not suitable for vegans because of how they are filtered.
Isinglass is a substance obtained from the swimbladders of fish (especially Beluga sturgeon). Used mainly for the clarification of wine and beer, it is a form of collagen.

…something to think about this coming St. Patrick’s day!
*update* I found a great section on the Taste Better! website, the Vegan Beer, Wine, and Spirit guide.
I pledged….have you?
My friend Kelly sent this to me:
Every day we see animals who are neglected, malnourished,
beaten and abused. And every day we do all that is in our power
to save them. But saving the victims of animal cruelty is not enough.
We want to stop cruelty in its tracks.
Join us in adding your name to the thousands of others who have
taken the pledge to help the ASPCA protect animals from abuse,
then tell 5 friends and help spread the word. (ASPCA)

A couple years ago, I found a lump and went thru that whole process. I went ahead and had the lump removed, which thankfully was benign. I’m definitely more aware of checking every month. There’s a lot you can do for your health and preventing cancer with healthy food. A month or so ago, I watched a great documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer if you haven’t seen it, please watch it…it’s an incredible story of a young woman searching for treatments and alternative answers to curing her cancer. Her blog can be found here: Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Cancer
